Goose Egg

You've all seen the cartoons where the character gets bonked on the head and a giant goose egg appears. However, this was the first time I've ever seen it happen in real life. We were at my brother Mike's house Wednesday night and Jeff was playing on their swing set in the backyard. He tripped over a hula hoop and fell directly on the bottom rung of the ladder. And this is what appeared.

(Sorry the pictures aren't that great. They were taken at dusk with a camera phone. They were also taken about an hour after it happened, so the bump had been even bigger when it first happened. And ignore the goofy guy in the background...Matt!)

I didn't see it happen, my sister-in-law Candalyn was the witness. When my niece told me Jeff had a bonk on his head, I told her to tell Candalyn it was just chalk (he had colored all over his face with blue & purple chalk and it looked like a bruise). However, I thought I'd better just go see, just in case. My first reaction was nausea, to see that big of a bump on my little boy made me sick. The other thing that worried me was he wasn't crying (at least not by the time I got to him)and he was acting really tired (of course it was bed time). So after getting everyones opinions, calling relatives who were in the medical field, etc. We decided not to take him in. By an hour after it happened he was acting like himself again and he stayed awake the whole drive home (even with it being almost 10pm). That night we woke him up after a couple hours to make sure he was still okay and by the next morning he was the first one up and still acting fine. This is how it looked the next morning.

I'm grateful he's okay. I have yet to visit the ER with any of my children. (Of course there was the incident of Jeff burning both his feet to blisters last year on the black top, but we just took him to the Urgent Care for that. That's a story for another time). I'll never watch those cartoon bumps the same way ever again!

Actually you have seen that happen but you probably don't remember. At a family meeting at your old house years ago Blaine and I bumped heads while playing kickball. I remember laying down the rest of the night in the den with a big bump on my head. I'm glad Jeff is OK, though!

Yikes! Isn't it amazing how fast those bumps and bruises appear.

Alana, I know I've seen bumps on heads before, I've probably had some of my own. However, I think this is the biggest, bulgiest one I've ever seen.
