Today, I woke up at 7:20am, which was the first I'd moved all night, a rarity when you're a mother of four. I got the boys up and ready for school, briefly saw Lily before she left and made breakfast for the youngest three. I got a load of laundry started, had prayers with Tom before he headed out the door and sent the boys off to the bus stop. I got dressed and ate breakfast, got Sophie dressed and her hair done. I then bundled her up in her snow gear and bundled myself up as well to head out and shovel the snow.
It was a super cold morning, but Sophie had fun, and my nice neighbor came over to help us shovel. When that was done, we came back in, I switched the laundry, finished getting ready and then gathered our stuff. The stuff I gathered included some preschool papers I needed to cut out (and scissors), Sophie's backpack and Jeff's pet turtle in a bucket of water, along with some dried crickets, a towel and hand sanitizer.
We drove through the windy, snowy roads to Sophie's speech preschool. She was reluctant to go in as it was only her second time there, but I managed to convince her to stay. While she was in class, I checked on the turtle out in the van, then sat in the lobby of the school and cut out the things I needed for preschool this week. I got Sophie out of class a few minutes early and we headed over to the elementary school where Cedric was going to be giving his report on turtles. I carried the heavy bucket of water and turtle, through the windy snow and into the school (which caused a lot of head turns as I walked down the hall). I found Cedric's classroom just as he was about to give his report. He did a fantastic job!
And then we showed the class Tank the turtle. They thought it was so fun to watch him crawl around on the towel and then eat the dried crickets in the water.
After returning to the van, soaked with turtle water, Sophie, Tank and I headed home. I threw my turtle soaked coat into the last load of laundry and made lunch for Sophie, started up the chicken in the crock pot for dinner and finally made lunch for myself. I enjoyed a short, quiet lunch (Sophie was exhausted from the morning and went to have a short rest in her bed), read my scriptures, checked up on emails and Instagram, then cleaned up lunch.
I then worked with Sophie on her speech homework and had her do her job (sharpening all the preschool pencils). Then I walked Sophie over to her friends house and came back to work on preschool prep for the week. I got about an hour of work in, switched the laundry once more (I now had a pile of unfolded laundry on my bed), called to schedule a few doctors appointments for Sophie and went to pick up Lily from school. We got back and I went back down to do some more preschool work. I heard the boys come home from the bus, but knowing they get a half hour break before I require them to get stuff done, I stayed downstairs to keep working.
Around 4:00 I heard the doorbell ring and it was Sophie and her friend, Alyse coming over to play at our house. They wanted to go in the back yard and play in the snow, but with the windchill,
It was so cold (10°)! They insisted, so I put all of Sophie's snow stuff on her for the second time today and sent them out. I then helped the other kids (mainly Cedric) do piano practicing, jobs and homework. I checked on the girls once in a while and they were still having a blast playing in the snow. They lasted until 5:00! I couldn't believe they endured the cold wind for over an hour, but they came in happy with red cheeks and runny noses.
I headed back downstairs and kept working on preschool stuff, with a couple interruptions here and there from Sophie. Tom came home and handed me the books I'd asked him to pick up for me at the library. It was nearly 7:00 by the time I finished my stuff for preschool, so I hurried upstairs to help Tom finish up dinner prep. I was surprised the kids weren't complaining more about being hungry since we didn't eat until 7:30 when normally it's closer to 6-6:30 when we have dinner. But we had a nice meal and Tom had gotten nearly all the laundry folded before dinner, so that was great. We then did some clean up, Tom cleaned up the kitchen while I put away the towels and consoled Cedric who had just hit the back of his head on the edge of the piano bench while the boys were roughhousing. We then had family home evening and talked about the importance of keeping the sabbath day holy and the importance of the Sacrament. Afterwards, we threw the kids into the shower and got them ready for bed. I read books with Cedric and Sophie, tucked them in bed and told the big kids to go to bed while Tom finished up the dishes. After re-tucking in kids about five times (it seems to be our routine), I then went to shut off the computer, but I got looking up some ideas for my lesson I'm teaching this Sunday in Young Womens instead. After doing some studying for a bit, I came upstairs and talked with Tom for a bit about my lesson on the Plan of Salvation and things I could say to the girls. I then got in the shower. By the time I got in and out, it was 11:00! So I finished folding my laundry and putting it away and was going to get ready for bed, but got distracted a bit with Pinterest and Facebook (which used to distract me a lot more than it does now). I then finished getting ready for bed. That's when I decided I'd do a quick blog post about my crazy day, but it's taken me a little longer than planned (plus, Sophie got up a few minutes ago crying about her toy cat). So now that's it's 1:00am, I am finally retiring to bed, so I can get up in six and a half hours and face another busy day. (Oh, and Sophie got up again.)
I know life won't always be this busy, so it's fun to record these days now so we can look back on them in the future.
Good night!
