A Disneyland Date -Days 1 & 2

The Tuesday after Christmas, December 27th was like any other day.  Tom went to work, I took the kids in to get flu shots and did laundry and other things around the house and with the kids.  But that evening we had a fun date planned.
Tom came home and we loaded the boys and their stuff in the car and the girls and their stuff in the van.  Tom took the boys over to Bryce and Sara's house where they would be staying with their cousins for the next four days.  And I took Lily to her friend, Sammy's house and Sophie to Maren as she'd be staying with her cousin, Charlotte.  On the way to Tom's parent's house (that was to where we were meeting up), I swung in and picked up a foot long sandwich from Subway for our dinner.  We gave the van and Sophie to Maren and picked up Tom's brother, Eric and were off to the airport!  Eric dropped us off and we headed in to do the usual airport routine.  We got through security quickly and found our gate, where we settled in to eat our sandwiches.

It was exciting to be at the airport, just the two of us.  Soon it was time to board the plane.  We flew the hour or so flight to the Long Beach airport where a shuttle picked us up and drove us to our hotel.  We could see the fireworks from Disneyland off in the distance as we drove along the freeway (ironically, that was the only time we saw the fireworks the whole week.  We must've been on a ride or something when they were going off while we were in the park).  We got to the Travelodge around 10pm and went to bed shortly after settling in.
The next morning came early.  We got up around 6:20am and got ready, ate a continental breakfast and then started our 20 minute walk to the Disneyland Parks.  We were surprised there wasn't more of a line to get into Disneyland.
It was only 7:30am and the park didn't open until 8am. The ticket guy told us to just use our magic morning and we could get in right away, and still use it again another day.  We weren't planning on that, but it was nice to walk past the crowd waiting to get in and just go right in ourselves.
Usually we do Adventure Land first, but since that wasn't open yet, we went straight to Fantasy Land and got in line for the Peter Pan ride.  It was only about a 15-20 minute wait, so we felt like it was a good choice.  After that ride, we went over to Adventure Land about the time the park was really opening, got Fast Passes for Indiana Jones and jumped onto the Jungle Cruise.  In fact, we were able to do six rides all in the first two hours and we were surprised there wasn't more of a crowd.  (Being the week between Christmas and New Year's we knew it was the busiest time of year and were expecting crowds).  Sadly, we'd gotten a call that morning from Eric saying our furnace wasn't working.  We felt bad for him, but we were grateful he was house sitting for us and was able to tell us then, instead of coming home to a freezing house later.  Tom was Face Timing with him trying to figure out the problem as we were walking around the park.
By about 10am, the crowds seemed to appear.  There were people everywhere and we were watching the wait times of rides increase rapidly.  This picture doesn't do justice, but you can see all the people.
We didn't mind though, we were there together, without kids (who would've been complaining about the long lines) and with two of us, we could get through the lines sometimes faster.  The weather was perfect too (low 70's)!  In fact, we were getting quite hot while waiting in line for the Matterhorn for nearly 45 minutes.
It was worth the wait though.  And we realized they had a single rider line, which we took advantage of later on (if you've never been on the Matterhorn at night, I highly recommend it).
The worst was trying to go anywhere when the parade was about to start, because so much much of the walk-ways were closed and you literally had to wait in line just to walk somewhere.  Our app said the crowd capacity reached 96% that day.

One of our longest lines was for It's a Small World (which I love at Christmas time).  We waited for an hour to go on it.  But, again, it wasn't bad.  We ate the snacks we'd brought in as our lunch, listened to a marching band, people watched, checked things on our phones and just visited.
Our friends had told us about "The Little Man at Disneyland" and so we had bought the book a few months before and then found his house while we were there.

That afternoon it was still hot, we were starting to get tired and still a bit hungry, so it was the perfect time to stop at the Enchanted Tiki Room and grab a Dole Whip.
We were smart to use fast passes and did a few more rides.  Our longest line we waited in that day was for the Finding Nemo Submarine, 65 minutes.  We again, played games and checked out social media on our phones (we had an portable charger, which came in handy).  We had pushed ourselves most of the day, but had done a lot!  Even with the crowds.
But we were getting hungry (We hadn't had a real meal since breakfast at 6;45am), so around 5pm we decided to get dinner.  We went to the Plaza Inn because they give you a lot of good food, so it's worth the small fortune you have to pay to eat in Disneyland.  We were so hungry and had just sat down to eat, but right after we snapped this picture, I felt something wet land on my head.  Yep, we were sitting right under a tree full of birds!  After cleaning up the bird poop in my hair, and moving to a spot away from trees, we enjoyed our meal (even though my appetite had been tainted a little from the incident).
We then enjoyed just wandering around main street.  We looked at the gift shops, saw the giant Christmas tree and took a relaxing break in the Mr. Lincoln exhibit.
I'm too much of a cheapskate to buy anything in Disneyland, but it was fun to window shop.
We thought the crowds would start dying down that evening, but oh no, it was still packed!  We were so grateful to have Fast Passes for Hyperspace Mountain (which I really liked the Star Wars theme, by the way).  You can't see it very well, but the stand-by line at 9pm was 170 minutes!  We only waited about 25 with our Fast Passes and felt bad for those in the three hour long line.
One of the Disneyland secrets is go on Splash Mountain at the end of the day.  We went both that morning and again that night (about 11:30pm) and had hardly any wait either time (which was awesome after seeing the wait on Hyperspace Mountain).
But we were tired and knew we had a long walk back to the hotel.  So we left a few minutes before the park was to close at midnight.  As we walked back, we realized how hungry we were, so we found a yummy pizza joint on the way back, that was still opened, and got a slice before getting back to the hotel and going to bed.  We got another text from Eric, and despite him getting the furnace to start working again earlier that day, it was now out again.  It would've been 1am at home, so we told him to grab a space heater and blankets and we'd talk to him in the morning.
My feet were so tired, and I could tell my legs were going to be hating me the next day, but we still had a few more days a head of us.  We were still excited to get up and do it all over again the next day.  We are a little crazy.

December Festivities

After Thanksgiving, we started decorating for Christmas.

I'm not much of a decorator, but I do enjoy decorating for Christmas.  I did all the Christmas lights myself, except for the roof, which Tom does each year.
Also, the packages started to arrive.  The perks of Christmas shopping in 2016 is you can do it in the comfort of  your own home, or while sitting around at Thanksgiving.  The disadvantage is you start accumulating boxes real fast, and sometimes you don't know where to put them all.  The bathtub made for a temporary storage spot until a better one could be created.
The first Christmas party we had was our ward party.  The Young Women were in charge of the decorations.  My friend, Chris (also our Laurel adviser) volunteered to head up the project, and it turned out beautiful.
The Young Women helped make the lanterns and table decorations.
I was in charge of the donation boxes and Christmas tree corner.
Sophie and Cedric sang in the program with the primary.  They are standing together on the right.
We left the party early, dropped the kids off at home and headed to Aimee and Matt's house for an adults only cousin party.  There was a huge turn out and it was so fun to mingle with my cousins.  We used to see each other a lot more than we do now.

Dolfie, our Elf on the Shelf came back a few weeks before Christmas.  He and Jeff had a special connection this year. ;)

Sophie and I go out to eat sometimes with Grandma Kay.  Sophie brought her new kitties along that she'd gotten and her cousin, Charlotte's birthday party one day.

We decided to take advantage of an extra warm December evening and went downtown to see the lights (the high was 50 that day!)
I can never get tired of seeing the lights at Temple Square.
We happen to have gone the same night as our friends, Tiffany and Kenny and their family, so we went around together.

Between us, there were nine kids in our group!

The following Sunday, our stake did a Christmas Choral with choirs from all the stakes, plus a combined choir and a few other musical numbers.  I participated in it and although it took extra time on my already busy Sundays (plus an early morning practice on Saturday), it was fun.  They ended the night with a live nativity.
Then next day we went to dinner at our friend, Jeff and Amanda's house.  They are good friends of ours from our old neighborhood, and we've made it a tradition to do a red and green dinner with them each year.  Lily loved having two girls close to her age to hang out with.  Cedric and Sophie loved playing with their dog...
and Jeff had fun playing with their youngest son.

Lately, Jeff's favorite thing to do is toss water bottles and see if he can land them upright (or upside-down) on top of the fridge.  He stands and throws them all the time.

Cedric got his Bobcat award in scouts.  He was just a little bit excited, can you tell?

Lily had her school choir concert and did a fantastic job.  Her teacher always does entertaining numbers and Lily even got to sing a solo/trio on the final song!
If you look closely, you can spot Lily.  She's the second to the back row, kind of in the center.  If you see a girl with a blue scarf, she's next to her.
I'm so proud of my talented girl!

The following Sunday we did our annual Christmas party with my side of the family.  We do dinner, a watch "Breath of Heaven", and a talent show.  This year, Cedric played "Deck the Halls" on the piano, Lily sang "Stille Nacht", Jeff did a magic trick and Sophie sang "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer".
Then the kids all participated in the nativity play. Let's just say, it was probably our most irreverent play yet.
Lily was Mary and Jeff was the donkey.
Sophie was the shepheard.
And Cedric was one of the wise men (or should we say smart-alec men).

Back in September, we had family pictures done.  We got them back just in time for Christmas.  I love how they turned out!
My beautiful Lily.
My handsome Jefferson.
My fun-loving Cedric
My adorable Sophie
And the love of my life, Tom.
My everything.

The kids participated in their school festivities the week before Christmas.  I found this picture on the school FB page and spotted Jeff.  He's in the red shirt and hat, just left of the teacher.

Then all of a sudden, it was December 23rd!  Poor Jeff spent most of the day asleep on the couch with a migraine.
By that evening he felt better and we let the kids each open their presents from each other, because they were too excited to wait.
Sophie gave Lily some potpourri wax and warmer for her room.
Cedric gave Jeff Bop-it.
Jeff gave Cedric a giant gummy bear and Vision figure for the Disney Infinity game.
And Lily gave Sophie another Little Live Pet frog.

The next day was Christmas Eve!  We did our annual tradition of going swimming at a rec center.
Since Christmas eve was on a Saturday this year, Tom was able to come with us!  We had Mike and his kids and Aimee's kids there too.

That night we did our traditional Larsen Christmas Eve party.  We all brought our own dinner.  Then the kids did the nativity play again.  This one was a little more respectful, and we even had two live baby Jesus'!  our three-month-old niece, Lorelai played the newborn and our great-nephew, Bruce played the toddler for when the wise man came.  Lily was Mary and Jeff was the donkey again, Cedric was an angel and Sophie was a sheep.
We sang around the Christmas tree.  Always a fun tradition.
And we did our gift exchange.

That night, the kids got to open one more present... New pajamas!
That night, the kids all slept downstairs, Sophie in Lily's room and Cedric in Jeff's.  While they slept, Santa came!
The rule was, the next morning they had to stay in bed until 7:00 and had to stay downstairs until 8:00. So right at 8:00 we got a phone call from the kids telling us it was time to get up.  We came down to find the kids already lined up and ready to go. (They had been posed like that for quite a while, since Tom and I had to use the bathroom, brush our teeth, etc. before we came down.)
Tom gave them the instructions and then we headed up stairs.
Cedric was so excited about his boxing set, robot and other toys.
Lily loved her new camera, hair stuff, mirror and other things.
Sophie was so excited to get her slinky dog and Star Lily Unicorn as well as a few other toys.
Jeff loved his drone and magic kit he got with a couple other items.
Even Jeff's turtle, Tank got something in his stocking... Three live feeder fish!
The kids spent a lot of the morning playing with their Santa gifts.

Even Tank loved his Christmas present.
Another fun surprise was that it had snowed that night!  It was the perfect white Christmas.
The kids all enjoyed eating the cereal Santa had brought.  Then we opened more presents.
Since Mom and Dad had already gotten their presents (new fridge, dishwasher, carpet, etc.) it was nice to get some little surprises from the kids.

Tom and I exchanged a few presents from each other, then we ate our Christmas breakfast casserole for Brunch.  We had to hurry and get ready, because we had church at 1:00.
After our hour long church meeting, we headed home and put our comfy clothes on.  Then we headed over to Natalie and Travis' house for dinner.

My Dad and Suzy are on their mission in England so they had mailed us all candy from Great Britain.  We played a quick dice game to decide who got to pick the candy first (since they were all different) and had a good time.
Then it was time to open our final presents.  The kids did their cousin gift exchange.

And then the adults did their exchange.  It was a fun Christmas day.

The next day, we worked on cleaning up the house, do laundry and de-junking our old toys.  I also did a trip to Costco where I got new tires put on the van (Tom's Christmas present).
The rest of the week we were all away.  Details coming up in my next post.

But we got home just in time to host a fun New Year's Eve party.  We had a lot come this year and had a good time playing games, watching football, eating way too much food and visiting.  We had our friends, Tiffany and Kenny come with their kids, one of Maren's friends with her girls and a lot of Tom's family.

It was fun to have so much of Tom's family here.
We even taught them how to play "Hitty, Pinchy, Slappy, Cutty, Cowy".
Soon it was time to bring in the new year.  We got the kids all ready with pop-its and horns.
Then headed out in the cold for the final countdown.  Happy New Year!
The next day we had to get up early for 9am church.  I managed a nap that afternoon, and woke up to Tom playing Risk with the kids.  What a great dad!  We ended the day watching the new "Pete's Dragon" (well, Tom watched football with his buddy, Jeremy instead).
Because New Years was on a Sunday, Tom and the kids had Monday off as well.  Tom had come down with a cold, and so we spent a lot of the day sleeping in, shoveling snow, doing things around the house, our new years jar (we measure the kids and write about them every year and put it in a jar), and I still had to get my preschool stuff ready for the week.
Now we are back to reality.
2017 is here!  We are excited to see what it has in store for us.
